Center for Native Ecosystems

NameCenter for Native Ecosystems
Organization DescriptionWe are passionate defenders of the native biological diversity of the Greater Southern Rockies. Since our inception in 1999, we have protected over one million acres of key wildlife habitat and bolstered existing protections for wildlife and plants on millions more. Our niche – advocating on behalf of imperiled native plants and wildlife – is increasingly important in the face of rapidly escalating extinction rates around the planet. As the myriad regional threats to our native biological diversity magnify - the mad scramble for oil and gas development in the West, political attacks on longstanding conservation laws, burgeoning urban sprawl – we remain steadfast in our defense of intact and healthy native ecosystems.

This organization operates in Colorado.

Organization ConcernsWe organize our conservation work into a number of strategic campaign areas, all of which are designed to prevent extinction, recover degraded natural landscapes, grow public and political support for conservation, and preserve our region’s quality of life through the protection of our open spaces, iconic wildlife, and abundant natural resources. Those areas are: Biodiversity Information Program; Climate Change; Defending the ESA; Dolores River Basin; Energy; GIS/Conservation Mapping; Habitat Connectivity; Linking Colorado's Landscapes; Sagebrush Sea; Species Safety Net; Wildlife Bridge at West Vail Pass.
